Brief Biography of William Bouguereau

Born the second son of Theodore and Marie Bouguereau in 1825. Father was a wine shop owner and not prosperous. Due to financial and marital difficulties, in the mid 1830’s William was sent to live with his Uncle Eugene Bouguereau, a priest and younger brother of Theodore. In addition to spiritual formation Eugene mentored William in the arts and saw to the beginning of his training at the College of Pons in 1839 where he studied under Louis Sage who had been a pupil of Ingres. After rejoining his family in Bordeaux, William gained admission into the municipal art school there. In 1846 he was admitted into the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and flourished from that point forward, completing some 800 works over the course of his career.
